This is the culmination of a project that began more than 2 years ago. A conversation here in store between long-time employee Joe Amadio and our owner Jim Rupp centered around the question of whether a drum had ever or could ever be made of wood from our state tree in Ohio, The Buckeye. The timing of that conversation happened to be around the upcoming 40th Anniversary of Columbus Percussion.
Being a long time playing artist for the Massachusetts based drum maker Noble & Cooley, Jim knew just who to ask. While they had certainly never attempted Buckeye wood, they were excited to try. Jim, who happens to own a farm here in Central Ohio, felled a tree and the project was underway. Over the last two years, a little more than 20 of these drums have been made using N&C's slow and true, steam-bent single-ply process, and till now, all were produced as special orders. #21 here is the first to actually be a stock drum for us at Columbus Percussion, and we do not expect it to last long.
Single-ply, steam-bent, Ohio-sourced Buckeye wood with reinforcement rings. Noble & Cooley Brass hardware including snare throw, butt, and lug casings. Chrome flange hoops and tension rods. A simple oil rubbed finish to bring out the Buckeye wood's natural grain. All of our Anniversary Buckeye drums are one of a kind and this a rare chance to have one of the final ones available.
