Drum CircleOur apologies to the drummer faithful; tonight’s drum circle (01/05/2009) has been cancelled due to everyone being sick. We expect everyone in the Greater Columbus area (if not Ohio) to be sick tonight around 8:00 P.M. If you’re not sick already, you may want to leave work early to prepare…being sick. Go Buckeyes!

Big Beat Recap

Big Beat
The first year of the Big Beat event was a great success. We had a great turnout (over 50!) and a bunch of people walked away with gear, from cymbal packs to snares to the kit we gave away as the grand prize. We want to thank everyone who attended this inaugural Big Beat event, because we couldn’t have done it without you. We hope you guys enjoyed it as much as we did!

We had a great time with Bob Breithaupt and Reggie Jackson who came and gave clinics, as well as Jeff Jones who not only hosted the event and kept us entertained, but held a drum circle as well. We raised a lot of money both for the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation and for The Victory Mission. We’re still waiting on official numbers for the nationwide Guinness World’s Record, but we’ll put those up as soon as we know. Again, thanks for coming, and we’re looking forward to next year!

Big Beat
The sound of drums will rumble across North America on Sunday, November 2 as nine Five-Star member drum shops launch The Big Beat, to bring together the largest gathering of drummers ever assembled, celebrate the joy of drumming and raise money for worthwhile causes. Not only will each location try to break the Guinness world record for the most drummers playing the same beat at one time (previously set by Donn Bennett Drum Studio, with 533), but the participants will also try to set a record for drummers in all cities playing simultaneously!

Patterned after similar events that have been held by Five-Star members in Seattle, Tulsa and Houston, The Big Beat is the first attempt to coordinate efforts on a large scale, with the hope of expanding each year, until drummers across the globe are locked in on one worldwide groove.

Donn Bennett, owner of Donn Bennett Drum Studio in suburban Seattle and a co-founder of Woodstick, the semiannal Big Beat-type event that has been held for five years explains, “What started out as a lark has grown into the single most dynamic demonstration of the power of drums and drummers in our community, making this event the focal point of the Northwest drumming world.”
