Special sale on Pearl, Sabian, and Promark – The week of the clinic (Dec 3rd – 8th)

2009 saw Todd Sucherman win the Modern Drummer Reader’s Poll for #1 Rock Drummer, #1 Educational DVD with “Methods and Mechanics” as well as #1 Clinician in DRUM! Magazine all while touring the world with the multi-platinum Styx and performing drum clinics and recording sessions from coast to coast. But the musical history began basically at birth.

Todd Sucherman grew up in a musical family. His father, Arnold J. Sucherman was a doctor by day, and a big band drummer by night. He was the house drummer at the famed Chez Parre’ in Chicago through the 1940s and 50′s. During that time he worked with Lena Horne, Sammy Davis Jr., Sophie Tucker, Joe E. Lewis, Jack Benny and countless others. While on the road, at a gig in New Orleans, Arnold met a young actress, Jo Seiwert, who was performing together in the same variety show. They were married and soon formed a family of their own.

Paul was first (keyboards), then Joel (bass), then Todd (drums). Todd was fascinated with the drums as an infant. His father taught him to play and could read music by age five. His first paying gig was with his brothers, “The Sucherman Brothers” at age six. They continued to play together and with other musicians for years.

Todd kept up with his musical studies through school and attended Berklee College of Music for one year. There he studied privately with Gary Chaffee, a world renowned educator with former students the likes of Steve Smith and Vinnie Colaiuta.

In 1988, Todd returned to Chicago and quickly established himself as a first call musician in the recording scene. As an in demand player for live and session work, this led to his association with the band Styx. Todd was called in to record when Styx’s John Panozzo was ill. After John Panozzo’s untimely death, Todd’s position in the band was solidified. Thirteen years later Styx continues to play to millions of fans all over the world averaging 100 dates a year. Todd has recorded several albums with the band including “Big Bang Theory” which put the band in the top 50 on Billboard for the fourth straight decade. In-between his time with Styx he’s recorded over 1000 radio and TV spots and worked with artists diverse as Peter Cetera, Brian Culbertson, Spinal Tap, Michael Bolton, The Falling Wallendas, Eric Marienthal, and Brian Wilson (including his 2003 release with Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton and Elton John.) Todd has been an in demand clinician performing at drum festivals around the world.

In 2007 he produced and played on the debut from Taylor Mills, “Lullagoodbye” which featured appearance from Brian Wilson and Tommy Shaw.

After years of touring and recording, Sucherman began work on his much anticipated instructional DVD release “Methods and Mechanics” available from Altitudedigital.com. In this presentation that Modern Drummer magazine called “a stunning achievement” and “one of the most stunning looking and sounding DVDs ever”, Sucherman brings the knowledge of thousands of gigs, shows and recording sessions along with over three decades as a professional drummer to this useful and unique DVD package. Astonishing technique, power and musicality explode from the various musical and solo performances throughout this presentation. Working with artists over a myriad of genres diverse as Styx, Brian Wilson, Spinal Tap, Eric Marienthal, Peter Cetera, John Wetton, Steve Cole, The Falling Wallendas and countless more, there’s a wealth of knowledge imparted that goes way beyond just the technical aspects of drumming. Methods and Mechanics is filled with practical career tips that will help you navigate through the music business as well as mental aspects and cerebral approaches to the art of playing music on the drums. Filmed in 16X9 in High Definition at a stunning location this DVD features music from Styx, Taylor Mills and Jerry Goodman and contains various solos and playing examples in an array of styles as well as technical lessons to enhance your rhythmic and musical vocabulary.

Sucherman won the Modern Drummer Magazine Reader’s poll for #1 Educational DVD as well as #1 Rock Drummer for 2009, as well as #1 Clinician in DRUM!

Todd has appeared on records released or unreleased with:

You may not know it, but you’ve heard Mike’s work. For 10 years, he was a regular on the Los Angeles recording scene, bringing his special talents to many film and television soundtracks. In addition to every Mel Brooks movie from Spaceballs to Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Mike’s playing may be heard on many popular, syndicated television shows, including Home Improvement, Dinosaurs, and The Little Mermaid. His recording work is included in countless jingles, record projects, music for video, and lots of music and loop libraries.

Returning to the sanity of the Northwest after 10 years of life in Southern California, Mike continues to develop his unique talents. His varied performance abilities keep Mike busy recording, creating drum loops, and giving drum clinics in the U.S. and abroad. Mike holds a Master’s degree in Percussion from The University of Southern California and a Bachelor’s degree in Percussion from The University of Oregon. He is the author of All About…Electronic Percussion, published by Hal Leonard, and a frequent columnist for DRUM! magazine. His continued album tracking and national jingle work as a drummer, programmer, hand percussionist, and composer can be heard on music for Hewlett-Packard, Jeld-Wen, Microsoft, Westin Hotels, and Nike.

Mike has been heavily involved in electronic percussion design since the mid-80s, and his ideas and designs continue to influence the direction of electronic drums and percussion.DRUM! magazine’s Drummies readers’ poll named him runner-up electronic drummer of 2003. Mike continues to enlighten musicians about electronic percussion as a product specialist for Roland Drums and Percussion.

The sound of drums will rumble across North America once again on Sunday, November 6 as 16 Five- Star member drum shop locations participate in The Big Beat and raise money for worthwhile causes. Billed as the world’s largest multi-city drum set event, last year’s Big Beat drew 1653 drummers and percussionists with about 6000 spectators and raised more than $54,000 for charity.

Each city will have a variety of fun events throughout the day, including guest appearances by major- name drummers, World’s Fastest Drummer contests and raffles and giveaways of percussion gear from the industry’s best-known manufacturers, with top Big Beat pledge-raisers in each city being awarded special prizes. There will also be a national raffle with the grand prize-winner getting a bass drum head signed by Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones! But, the highlight of the day will be at 5:45PM Eastern time when all of the drummers in each of the 16 cities play the same groove in unison. This feat will be achieved through a video internet connection, with the director in each city following the conductor in Seattle.

Columbus Percussion will be having Tom Griffin in the store from 6-8pm on Tuesday October 18th. Do you have a question about a DTX kit you have? Want some answers before you purchase a kit? Tom will be here to answer all your questions, demo product features and offer his expertise on everything Yamaha DTX.

With the development of the new DTX-PAD, Yamaha’s electronic drums have never felt better. And DTX drums have features every drummer can use. From the practice room to the stage and in the studio, Yamaha DTX series of electronic drums truly has something for everyone.

Yamaha Product Manager Tom Griffin will be on hand to present the DTX lineup and discuss today’s methods of teaching, performing and recording with electronic drums. Come ask questions and test drive the revolutionary new DTX-PADS featuring a Textured Cellular Silicone (TCS) head for superior feel and response.

Tom Griffin began consulting for Yamaha Music Production in 1999, and came on board in 2006 as a Drum Product Specialist. He has since evolved into a Technical Sales Specialist with a specialty in Electronic Percussion. His passion for integrating the highest technology with the primitive form of drumming makes him well qualified to demonstrate the merits of Yamaha’s DTX Series of Electronic Drum Systems.

An early adopter of midi and electronic percussion, Tom studied at HARTT School of Music where he did his senior thesis on “MIDI and the Modern Musician”. Eventually building a project studio, Tom began recording and producing local bands. He has worked with Gold and Platinum producer Dennis Bell, producing and engineering several recordings for Bell’s GuavaJamm Entertainment record label.

These days Tom enjoys pushing the musical limits of what a drummer is “supposed to do” with a pair of sticks and a set of electronic drums. He can switch from laying down a groove, to playing the bass line, chords and melodies all without missing a beat. His electronic drum demonstrations are sure to inspire those in attendance.
