Chris Adler was born in Washington, DC on November 23, 1972. As a toddler, Chris began playing with broken sticks from his backyard on his parents coffee cans. As he grew he studied years of piano with his mother, saxophone and acoustic guitar before settling on playing bass for several high school bands and recording projects.

Once in college at Virginia Commonwealth University beginning in 1990 Chris quickly met up with musicians in the local area (Richmond, VA). Chris played bass on several records and toured the U.S. from ’91-’94. When at home, Chris tinkered with his first “trading post” drum kit in his apartment bed room while the neighbors were at work, but nothing serious developed until the end of 1994. In September of that year, Chris met back up with several members of his freshman dorm year experience interested in starting a band. A bass player was already in the mix, so Chris decided to put the bass back in the case and turn to the drums full-time. The learning curve was extreme for the progressive metal act, soon to be named, “Burn the Priest.”

Burn the Priest recorded two 7-inch records, one 14 song full length CD and played hundreds of shows across the US in their 5-1/2 year career. Chris’s drumming helped drive the band and his unorthodox playing choices and agility garnered much attention and praise. The band became the most downloaded metal band of all time MP3.com which caught the attention of several record labels. The band knew that they were breaking the seams of the underground scene and forced themselves to take a leap of faith.

In the winter of 1999, the band replaced a guitar player, changed their name to LAMB OF GOD and signed with Prosthetic records. By September 2000, the groups’ debut CD New American Gospel was in stores and Chris was quickly approached for his first article in Modern Drummer Magazine. Chris’s atypical style, timing and speed combined with the progressive guitar work made this release stand out from the many of the underground cookie cutter metal bands of the time. Two years on the road followed with Chris continuing a rigorous practice schedule throughout.

In May of 2003 the band released its sophomore effort As the Palaces Burn. Chris’s playing had vastly matured and his phenomenal performance on this album helped push the band land in Rolling Stone, claim the Record of the Year Award for 2003 in Revolver Magazine and put the band in contention for a Grammy nomination in the Hard Rock category.

It wasn’t long before the big players came knocking and in September of 2003 the band signed to Epic/Sony records. The bands fan base continued to multiply as the band spent the better part of the next 12 months on the road and now had 4 videos in rotation on MTV2. Chris was now well known in the scene for his playing ability and was termed “a landmark to judge all extreme players by” by Modern Drummer.

On August 31, 2004 the band released its full length offering Ashes of the Wake. Once again, Chris’s playing continued to evolve, this time branching further into progressive territory with more unusual and stylistic choices throughout the recording. The album’s first week sales landed the #27 spot on the Top 200 Billboard Charts. The album landed them on many high profile tours including a headlining slot on Ozzfest 2004. During this album cycle the band released the platinum selling DVD Killadelphia, highlighting the bands performance and personalities on and off stage.

In 2005 Chris was asked, and performed at the prestigious Modern Drummer festival, his performance garnered a standing ovation at the event and landed him on the ‘Best of’ Modern Drummer Festival DVD in 2008.

In August of 2006, the band released ‘Sacrament’. The album landed at #8 on the Billboard charts, was nominated for a Grammy and was the highest selling metal album of the year. ‘Sacrament’ was praised as album of the year from critics across the world and Chris and the band toured for 20 months in support. Chris landed cover articles in Drum!, Rhythm (UK) and Modern Drummer magazine for the incredibly diverse and powerful drum recording. The band once again received a platinum award for the DVD chronicling the trek entitled ‘Walk With Me In Hell,’ and Chris was invited to write a regular column in Modern Drummer Magazine.

On February 6, 2009 the band will begin the first leg of the world tour for the new studio album ‘wrath,’ due for release on February 24. On this recording Chris has taken his greatest leap forward as a player from any one record to the next. Chris is well known for his footwork and unique rhythmic choices, which are once again represented well here, but the drumming on this album also showcases a significant growth in his hand speed and dexterity. Never satisfied, ‘wrath’ represents a balanced and intense effort to push into new ground and evolve as a player.

I can instruct as to realistic and practical applications of latin rhythms to the drum set. As you may know, I teach at the Musicians Institute and have 50+ students in my Advanced Drumset – Latin classes. My focus is not only on “need to know grooves” for professionals (i.e. a pro sounding bossa, samba, songo and some “latin jazz-y” chops) but also on modern Western pop songs that use “latin” rhythms. Groups like Beastie Boys, Alien Ant Farm, Foo Fighters, Lettuce and The Mars Volta all use latin rhythms in one way or another. I have transcriptions of these grooves along with, of course, the original tunes. This is definitely a focus of my master classes, workshops and private lessons. It makes the study much more viable. Students get to hear why they should know these rhythms.” The class will run about 2 hours, and admission is $15 a person. Lessons are also available prior to the master class ($40 for an hour lesson). To sign up, call us at (614) 885-7372.
Some of the biggest names in the drum business are proud to announce the search for the Drummer of Tomorrow. Beginning June 1st, drummers can film a solo or play-along performance, upload their video to DrummerofTomorrow.com, and be entered to win over $50,000 in prizes and drum gear. Prizes include drum sets from Mapex Drums, cymbals from Zildjian, drumheads from Remo, drum sticks from Vic Firth and songbooks from Alfred Music Publishing. In addition, the top winner will win an Artist Endorsement Contract from Mapex Drums, and will appear on the company’s official Artist Roster.

“This is an amazing opportunity to find the next great drummer, organically,” says Joe Hibbs, Product Marketing Manager for Mapex Drums. “It’s the only worldwide drum competition, spanning over a dozen countries.”

The Drummer of Tomorrow United States contest will be broken out into several elimination rounds, which run from June 1st, 2011 through 2012 at the Musik Messe show in Frankfurt, Germany. For the U.S. competition, entries will be accepted from June 1st through July 31st, 2011 on the U.S. contest site DrummerofTomorrow.com. As winners advance through the contest, they will be flown to various locales to perform. Destinations include a studio in Nashville, Tennessee, the 2012 Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim, California, and the 2012 Musikmesse show in Germany.

Entries will be judged by voters on the contest site, DrummerofTomorrow.com, as well as a panel of drum industry professionals and artists from the Mapex roster.

“This is the ultimate audition for any drummer out there – playing in front of a worldwide audience,” says Hibbs.

It’s almost summer again, and that means Roland’s V-Drums Contest is back! Roland U.S. is pleased to announce the 2011 V-Drums® National Championship, its second annual competition to find the top drummer in the United States.

The V-Drums National Championship gives drummers throughout the U.S. the chance to make history by competing at the local, regional, and national levels with solo drum performances on the TD-20SX V-Pro® Series V-Drums. Along the way, contestants can win professional percussion gear and swag, with the champion drummer earning the opportunity to represent the U.S. at the V-Drums World Championship in January 2012, at the Winter NAMM Show.

Players start by submitting a digital audition, via YouTube™ or other video sharing site, to qualify for one of more than 30 preliminary competitions to be held at local music retailers throughout the country from June 23rd-30th. Winners at the prelims will go on to compete at eight regional semi-finals on July 28th, with the top players moving on to the national finals on August 25th at Sam Ash, in Las Vegas.

Prizes throughout the various rounds will include, but not limited to, a TD-20SX drum set, RMP-5 Rhythm Coach® and stand, a TD-9KX2, a set of custom REMO shell wraps, Drum Workshop hardware, and subscriptions to DRUM! magazine.

The finals event will host an array of live performances by top drumming artists and celebrity professional drummers as the guest judges.

Roland U.S. will evaluate the digital auditions and select preliminary round qualifiers based on musicianship, stage presence, and the creative use of technology in their drum performances.

Digital auditions are being taken now through June 7th, at www.rolandus.com/go/v-drums_contest/.
